LIMESTONE WALLS

BASIC TIPS

  • Spending the extra time getting a level base will make the rest of the wall go faster.
  • Scoring the stone with a saw first, then splitting with a chisel will give you a more precise split.
  • Sizing your stone ahead of time will save you time in the long run.
  • Small left-over pieces of stone work well for shims.

GENERAL RULES

  • 4-6" of compactable base should be under the bottom course (hand-tamped in 2" lifts).
  • For walls over a foot tall, granular backfill, drain tile, and fabric are needed.
  • 2" of set back for every foot of wall is required.
  • All joints and corners should be staggered.
  • Varied thickness of stones should be used throughout the wall.
